Barry Higson – University of Liverpool – Former Building Surveyor

Recent schemes where Teksol Ltd have been involved for me are as follows:

  1. Life Sciences – 1st and 2nd floor laboratories
  2. Electrical Engineering – 3rd floor laboratories
  3. Translational Medicine Phase 1 – Physiology Department ground floor laboratories
  4. Translational Medicine Phase 2 – 1st floor Medical School laboratories

1                      Life Sciences – 1st and 2nd floor laboratories

This scheme Teksol worked as a subcontractor for approx. £166K involving the replacement of existing underbench units with new cupboards/drawer units and replacement of various Trespa worktops.

The scheme had a number of changes and additional works which required careful organisation with M&E trades due to existing services within the benching.

Teksol reacted to changes efficiently and worked well with other trades and produced a good quality product, completed on time.

2                      Electrical Engineering – 3rd floor laboratories

This scheme Teksol worked as a subcontractor for approx. £77K involving the full strip out of all existing laboratory furniture and replacement with new powder coated frames, Trespa work tops, under bench units with new cupboards/drawer units, wall cupboards and reagent shelving.

This required the involvement of M&E Contractors to ensure all services were isolated prior to demolition and reconnected during the building works all in accordance to end user service point requirements.

The overall quality expectations of the scheme were high as we had to compete with Chinese student standards set at  Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.

Teksol reacted to changes efficiently and worked well with other trades and produced a good quality product, completed on time.

3                      Translational Medicine Phase 1 – Physiology Department ground floor laboratories

This was approximately a £11K scheme involving the full strip out of all existing laboratory furniture and replacement with new powder coated frames, Trespa work tops, under bench units with new cupboards/drawer units, wall cupboards, shelving and laboratory sinks.

Teksol reacted to changes efficiently and worked well with other trades and produced a good quality product, completed on time.

4                      Translational Medicine Phase 2 – 1st floor Medical School laboratories

This scheme is currently out to tender with an anticipated value to Teksol of circa £90K.  It is envisaged that Teksol will be working as a subcontractor to the main Principal Contractor.  Teksol have been involved with the design and layout of the laboratories which are currently being stripped out entirely as an enabling scheme.  Teksol have produced Auto-Cad drawings following meetings with the multi discipline Design Team and advised the Team and Client on suggested layouts that would work in such an environment.  I have found Teksol very accommodating in this respect particularly as this time was not charged to the university which is rare in today’s competitive environment.

In conclusion, Teksol have been and continue to be a proactive Contractor whose involvement and works undertaken being to a high standard and I would have no problems in proposing them for further works in the University.

Wally Gifford – Liverpool University – Quantity Surveyor Project Manager

TEKSOL schemes recently completed for me were

  1. Building works to refurbish offices for security Dept to move into
  2. Refurbishment of GF male WCs and creation of a shower
  3. Refurbishment of 2nd floor female WC

1 – Security move scheme

This scheme was for £73K and involved bringing up office interiors to an acceptable standard

The scheme had many unknowns and changes were instructed throughout the works, also works were undertaken in a live environment

Teksol acted efficiently and produced a good quality finished product and completed on time

2 – GF Male WC refurbishment

This scheme was for £53K and involved full strip out of existing WC , construction of a new shower enclosure, full refurbishment of WC and line walls with Trespa paneling for ease of cleaning as well as full renewal of mechanical and electrical installations

The quality of sanitary ware and IPS panelling and vanity units was to a high standard, this with careful selection of WC cubicles produced a good quality WC which stood out from the norm

There were many problems within the existing structure which Integral rectified efficiently

3 – 2nd floor Female WC

This was approximately a£10K scheme involving full renewal of sanitary ware and shower enclosure

Walls were lined with PVC lining for ease of maintenance

There were modifications to the specification to produce a finished product where all services were concealed but care was required as asbestos was present and could not be disturbed

The quality of the finished product was good

In conclusion the works undertaken by Teksol were to a high standard and I would have no problems in proposing them for further works in the University.

Phillip Woodward – Capital Projects – Project Manager

The Project was to create a new Tissue Culture Laboratory suite from a number of existing laboratories on the first floor of the Biosciences Building. Teksol were employed as the main contractor on this project, with a contract value approaching £200K.

The works involved, stripping out all the existing finishes, fixtures and fittings and replacing with new Trespa worktop benching supported on powder coated framework, work units, flooring, decoration, sanitary wear, gas installation, complete gas detection system, control monitoring system, air-conditioning and a complete new electrical and lighting system.

Teksol completed all the works on programmed and within budget. Teksol mobilized quickly and reacted to change orders and co-operated well with the client at all time, maintaining access and services to the adjacent laboratories at all times. Weekly updates and frequent meeting ensured the project ran smoothly.

Teksol contributed significantly in assisting the Design Team to improve the specifications whilst reducing costs.

In conclusion, Teksol have been very cooperative and remained focused throughout this project. The whole team was diligent, skillful and acted professionally at all times. I would highly recommend them in any future projects.

Andrew Murphy – University Of Liverpool – Project Manager And Financial Support Assistant

I have enjoyed working with Teksol for countless years.

The firm has an extremely diligent, conscientious workforce seeking to achieve the best possible project for the University with every commission, This ethos being demonstrated on countless occasions when I’ve called upon their expertise, knowledge and proactive approach to overcome unforeseen site issues that design teams have not anticipated.

Commissions include the creation of:

  • Research / Teaching laboratories,
  • Teaching Spaces,
  • Lecture Theatres,
  • Office Suites
  • Production Kitchens
  • Residential

Building environments for projects range from Grade 2 historic listed premises through to modern day premises.  In terms of size and scale, the sites vary considerably from small confined occupied premises, to major refurbishment of departments embedded within the vast University portfolio.

The very nature of working within the University also requires Teksol to undertake works within occupied, operational premises.   Delivery therefore requires Teksol to deliver projects, whilst ensuring that the academic community is not disrupted requiring carefully planned access / egress / delivery routes / sequencing of works.

All projects undertaken by Teksol have always been completed within timescales required, within budget, to a high standard without accident or incident and to the satisfaction of both myself and the academic community the projects benefit.
